If you are going for a classic, elegant, and chic look for your home, contemporary leather furniture is a wise investment. Leather also has a homey feel, which makes the look of your space warm and modern at the same time. It is known for its quality, durability, and the comfort it provides. In terms of aesthetics, a sleek and contemporary leather lounge suite can be a striking statement in your living room. Good quality living room furniture, however, does not come cheap. And like everything that is of value, you’ll want to take good care of it so it lasts. Below are some tips on how to properly maintain your leather lounge.
For you to be able to give the best and proper care for your leather lounge, read and follow the manufacturer’s manual. Sure, it may sound like a big bore sometimes, but it will provide you some guidelines on the do’s and don’ts for your furniture.
Use a leather protection cream on your new leather lounge. It conditions, protects, and nourishes your leather. It provides a barrier to help protect the leather from oil and water-based stains, as well as general dirt and soiling, by holding the dirt at the surface and making it easier to clean off.
Accumulated dust and dirt can cause the leather of your furniture to peel and crack. Perspiration and body oils can also cause damage to the leather. With a soft, damp cloth, preferably microfiber, wipe the furniture clean at least twice a week. Do not use any types of oils. They can be absorbed by the leather and may result to patchy spots. For crevices that can’t be easily reached, use a vacuum to clean out the dust.
Do not attempt to wipe off any spills from the leather of your furniture, as this will just spread the liquid or the grease. Instead, using a soft, non-abrasive, damp cloth, apply small pressure from the outside, moving inward to the centre of the spillage. Do not ever leave a spill unattended, as the leather may absorb it and may cause permanent damage. Spot clean immediately.
Never expose your leather to direct sunlight. Exposure to direct sunlight hastens the aging and natural discoloration of the leather. It can also cause the leather to develop cracks. Use blinds or curtains on your windows to shield your leather furniture.
Treat your leather as a material that breathes. If you are too warm or too cold, chances are, your leather is too. Keep your leather at least 50 centimetres away from radiators and air conditioners.
Plump up the cushions every day to lengthen life of the fillings. This will also help your leather furniture avoid creases and wrinkling.
You can do this on your own, or you can call a leather specialist to do periodic cleaning and conditioning of your leather furniture. Do this at least 3 to 4 times a year. Do not use general cleaning products, saddlery care products, shoe care products, or even mild detergents when cleaning your leather furniture. They can cause fading, and your leather may become brittle and damaged. Leather conditioning will help your leather look refreshed and brand new, and will rejuvenate the look of your leather lounge.
